Wildlife protection
Conservation South Luangwa
Our 2015-16 Investors in Wildlife Appeal is raising money to counteract indiscriminate snaring and to treat snared animals in the South Luangwa National Park in Zambia. For this work, and for funding the regular anti-poaching team we provide an annual grant to the Conservation South Luangwa(CSL), which carries out vital and effective field work recruiting its rangers and staff from the local people. CSL also sponsors the local orphans' school.
CLS is a non-profit Society with charitable status and a binding constitution, formed by stakeholders in the wildlife resource. The aims of the Society are designed to support the law enforcement activities of the Zambia Wildlife Authority (ZAWA) and the Community Resource Boards, in management of the wildlife estates for the benefit of the people and the Government of the Republic of Zambia. The Society also strives to mitigate human animal conflict in the game management areas and assist local communities with alternative income generating activities. CLS is run by a Board of Trustees, funded by donors and managed by a full-time professional team.
The founder and managing director is Rachel McRobb, a British Zambian national, who runs an effective and professional organisation and provides detailed quarterly reports to donors. Operations are managed by Benson Kenyembo. All the staff are from the local community, many are ex-poachers and ex-National Parks and Wildlife scouts who were retrenched during the transition phase of ZAWA; hence the Society is a major employer in the area, along with the lodges, tour operators and ZAWA itself.
